BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to observe LP45 (Lactobacillus plantarum 45) to investigate the mechanism by which LP45 attenuates oxidative stress-induced damage and regulates the osteoblast-osteoclast balance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The oxidative stress level and osteoblast- and osteoclast-related proteins were detected by immunofluorescence staining, Western blotting, ROS fluorescent probe and ELISA. Osteoblast cell proliferation capacity was determined by the CCK-8 assay. X-ray observation and HE staining were used to detect the effect of LP45 on osteoporosis. RESULTS: The expression level of SHP2 and Src was significantly increased, and the expression levels of NOX4, P22, P47, IL-1ß, NLRP3, IRF3, RANK, ß-catenin and INF-ß were inhibited in LP45 group and LPS + LP45 group as compared to those in LPS group. Compared with that in LPS group, the concentration of SOD was increased and the concentration of MDA was decreased in LPS + LP45 group. The protein expressions of OPG, RANKL, RUNX3, RANK and ß-catenin in LP45 group and LPS + LP45 group increased. The protein expressions of NF-κB, CREB and AP-1 in LP45 group and LPS + LP45 group decreased significantly. The results were also confirmed by immunofluorescence staining and ROS fluorescent probe. X-ray observation and HE staining showed that LP45 could inhibit the progression of osteoporosis. CONCLUSION: LP45 can exert its antioxidant effect by inhibiting the production of oxidative stress to activate the SHP2 signaling pathway, thus promoting osteoblast differentiation and repressing osteoclast formation to maintain bone homeostasis and improve bone metabolism.

Rapid and accurate detection of the zoonotic nematode Anisakis is poised to control its epidemic. The clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/Cas-associated assay shows great potential in the detection of pathogenic microorganisms. The one-tube method integrated the CRISPR system with the recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) system to avoid the risk of aerosol pollution; however, it suffers from low sensitivity due to the incompatibility of the two systems and additional manual operations. Therefore, in the present study, the agarose hydrogel boosted one-tube RPA-CRISPR/Cas12a assay was constructed by adding the CRISPR system to the agarose hydrogel, which avoided the initially low amplification efficiency of RPA caused by the cleavage of Cas12a and achieved reaction continuity. The sensitivity was 10-fold higher than that of the one-tube RPA-CRISPR/Cas12a system. This method was used for Anisakis detection within 80 min from the sample to result, achieving point-of-care testing (POCT) through a smartphone and a portable device. This study provided a novel toolbox for POCT with significant application value in preventing Anisakis infection.

BACKGROUND: Echinococcosis is prevalent in 9 provinces in Western and Northern China. An epidemiological survey of echinococcosis in 2012 and 2016 showed cases of echinococcosis in Yunnan Province. AIM: To understand the spatial distribution and epidemiological characteristics of echinococcosis in Yunnan for the prevention and control of echinococcosis and to reduce the risk of infection in Yunnan Province. METHODS: Based on the China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention (CISDCP), echinococcosis cases reported from 36 hospitals and 34 Centers for Disease Control were investigated and epidemiologically analyzed from 2021 to 2022. The exclusion criteria included suspected cases, same case only counted once and cases not from Yunnan. A total of 705 cases were investigated, of which 397 cases were suitable for statistical analysis. In these 397 cases, epidemiological investigation was tracked in 187 cases. All data were inputted using double entry in the Excel database, with error correction by double-entry comparison. The data on echinococcosis cases in Yunnan Province were analyzed by ArcGIS 10.1 software to generate a density map of echinococcosis distribution. All statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS 17.0, including the chi-square test, linear regression test and logistic univariate and multivariate regression analyses. RESULTS: A total of 397 cases were found in 89 counties in Yunnan Province. The number of cases in the top three prefectures were Dali (38.1%), Diqing (10.1%), and Kunming (8.3%), and the top five counties were Jianchuan (9.1%), Shangri La (8.3%), Eryuan (7. 6%), Heqing (6.9%), and Dali Districts (5.0%). There were significant differences between the different areas. The case reporting rate by CISDCP (33.8%) was low; the first case was reported by CISDCP in 2002, and the highest number of cases was 50 (2017). Confirmed and clinical cases accounted for 62.5% and 37.5%, respectively. However, 90.9% of the cases of hydatid disease were reported by the hospital system, and only 9.1% of the cases of hydatid disease were found in the community through active screening. The difference between the two methods of case detection was statistically significant. Most of the cases of echinococcosis were found in farmers/herdsmen (75.1%) and students (9.1%). In addition, Han (43.6%) and Bai (26.2%) had a higher incidence of infection than other nationalities, and the liver (87.7%) and lung (6.8%) were the most common sites of cyst formation. Among the analyzed cases, 187 were epidemiologically analyzed and the clinical symptoms were not obvious in the early stage in 47.1% of cases. The results of logistic regression analysis showed that the age group, education level, presence of dogs in the family (either previously or currently), and handwashing (occasionally or not) were factors related to echinococcosis infection. 55.6% of cases were in endemic areas, and 44.4% of cases were in non-endemic areas. Among 83 cases in non-endemic areas, only 4 cases had been to endemic areas and had a history of living, working, travelling, or hunting in echinococcosis epidemic areas. CONCLUSION: Cases of echinococcosis were reported throughout the entire Yunnan province, with the majority distributed in Western Yunnan, suggesting that echinococcosis control should be strengthened in this area. We suggest that an epidemiological investigation should be carried out in the future, based on the clues from newly discovered cases in hospitals or from the CISDCP. The newly discovered cases in the hospital provided clues to comprehensively determine the location of cases and where epidemic spot investigation should be conducted.

Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis) is a zoonotic parasitic nematode with a unique life cycle, as all developmental stages are contained within a single host. Excretory-secretory (ES) proteins are the main targets of the interactions between T. spiralis and the host at different stages of development and are essential for parasite survival. However, the ES protein profiles of T. spiralis at different developmental stages have not been characterized. The proteomes of ES proteins from different developmental stages, namely, muscle larvae (ML), intestinal infective larvae (IIL), preadult (PA) 6 h, PA 30 h, adult (Ad) 3 days post-infection (dpi) and Ad 6 dpi, were characterized via label-free mass spectrometry analysis in combination with bioinformatics. A total of 1217 proteins were identified from 9341 unique peptides in all developmental stages, 590 of which were quantified and differentially expressed. GO classification and KEGG pathway analysis revealed that these proteins were important for the growth of the larvae and involved in energy metabolism. Moreover, the heat shock cognate 71 kDa protein was the centre of protein interactions at different developmental stages. The results of this study provide comprehensive proteomic data on ES proteins and reveal that these ES proteins were differentially expressed at different developmental stages. Differential proteins are associated with parasite survival and the host immune response and may be potential early diagnostic antigen or antiparasitic vaccine candidates.

BACKGROUND: Human cystic and alveolar echinococcosis are neglected tropical diseases that WHO has prioritized for control in recent years. Both diseases impose substantial burdens on public health and the socio-economy in China. In this study, which is based on the national echinococcosis survey from 2012 to 2016, we aim to describe the spatial prevalence and demographic characteristics of cystic and alveolar echinococcosis infections in humans and assess the impact of environmental, biological and social factors on both types of the disease. METHODS: We computed the sex-, age group-, occupation- and education level-specific prevalences of cystic and alveolar echinococcosis at national and sub-national levels. We mapped the geographical distribution of echinococcosis prevalence at the province, city and county levels. Finally, by analyzing the county-level echinococcosis cases combined with a range of associated environmental, biological and social factors, we identified and quantified the potential risk factors for echinococcosis using a generalized linear model. RESULTS: A total of 1,150,723 residents were selected and included in the national echinococcosis survey between 2012 and 2016, of whom 4161 and 1055 tested positive for cystic and alveolar echinococcosis, respectively. Female gender, older age, occupation at herdsman, occupation as religious worker and illiteracy were identified as risk factors for both types of echinococcosis. The prevalence of echinococcosis was found to vary geographically, with areas of high endemicity observed in the Tibetan Plateau region. Cystic echinococcosis prevalence was positively correlated with cattle density, cattle prevalence, dog density, dog prevalence, number of livestock slaughtered, elevation and grass area, and negatively associated with temperature and gross domestic product (GDP). Alveolar echinococcosis prevalence was positively correlated with precipitation, level of awareness, elevation, rodent density and rodent prevalence, and negatively correlated with forest area, temperature and GDP. Our results also implied that drinking water sources are significantly associated with both diseases. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study provide a comprehensive understanding of geographical patterns, demographic characteristics and risk factors of cystic and alveolar echinococcosis in China. This important information will contribute towards developing targeted prevention measures and controlling diseases from the public health perspective.

Volatile esters are major aromas contributing to the organoleptic quality of apple fruit. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation of volatile ester biosynthesis in apple remain elusive. This study investigated the volatile profiles and transcriptomes of 'Qinguan' (QG) apple fruit during development and/or postharvest storage. Although the constitution of volatiles varied widely between the peel and flesh, the volatile profiles of the peel and flesh of ripening QG fruit were dominated by volatile esters. WGCNA results suggested that 19 genes belonging to ester biosynthesis pathways and 11 hub transcription factor genes potentially participated in the biosynthesis and regulation of esters. To figure out key regulators of ester biosynthesis, correlation network analysis, dual-luciferase assays, and yeast one-hybrid assay were conducted and suggested that MdMYB94 trans-activated the MdAAT2 promoter and participated in the regulation of ester biosynthesis. This study provides a framework for understanding ester biosynthesis and regulation in apple.

Attention-based neural networks, such as Transformers, have become ubiquitous in numerous applications, including computer vision, natural language processing, and time-series analysis. In all kinds of attention networks, the attention maps are crucial as they encode semantic dependencies between input tokens. However, most existing attention networks perform modeling or reasoning based on representations, wherein the attention maps of different layers are learned separately without explicit interactions. In this paper, we propose a novel and generic evolving attention mechanism, which directly models the evolution of inter-token relationships through a chain of residual convolutional modules. The major motivations are twofold. On the one hand, the attention maps in different layers share transferable knowledge, thus adding a residual connection can facilitate the information flow of inter-token relationships across layers. On the other hand, there is naturally an evolutionary trend among attention maps at different abstraction levels, so it is beneficial to exploit a dedicated convolution-based module to capture this process. Equipped with the proposed mechanism, the convolution-enhanced evolving attention networks achieve superior performance in various applications, including time-series representation, natural language understanding, machine translation, and image classification. Especially on time-series representation tasks, Evolving Attention-enhanced Dilated Convolutional (EA-DC-) Transformer outperforms state-of-the-art models significantly, achieving an average of 17% improvement compared to the best SOTA. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that explicitly models the layer-wise evolution of attention maps. BACKGROUND: Application of chicken egg yolk immunoglobulin Y (IgY) for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori, HP) has gained much interest in recent years. Comparing with for treatment, IgY may be more advantageous when used for H. pylori detection. METHODS: Nine strains of H. pylori with different genetic backgrounds were inactivated and used to immunize hens, respectively, for the preparation of polyclonal anti-H. pylori immunoglobulin Y (anti-HP IgY). The proteins of H. pylori with reactivity to anti-HP IgY were detected by Western Blot. The five protein bands that can be well recognized by anti-HP IgY of each group, and were prevalent in all nine strains were excised from SDS-PAGE gel, digested and identified by Nano-HPLC-MS/MS analysis. The potential of these identified proteins as antigen detection targets was then assessed by sequence analysis. RESULTS: Anti-HP IgY derived from each group of specific strain immunized hens can recognize self-strain and non-self-strain antigens well. Five immunodominant antigens were identified as chaperonin GroEL, flagellin A, urease subunit alpha, peroxiredoxin and DNA starvation/stationary phase protection protein. Sequences analysis showed that both peroxiredoxin and DNA starvation/stationary phase protection protein were present in all 1000 strains of H. pylori queried, and the amino acid sequences were highly conserved. The highest sequence consistency between the DNA starvation/stationary phase protection protein of H. pylori and non-Helicobacter organisms was 52.59%, and the consistent sites were scattered and there was no continuous long fragment consensus sequence. CONCLUSION: DNA starvation/stationary phase protection protein was identified as an immunodominant antigen of H. pylori and sequence analysis indicated that it could serve as a potential antigen target for the diagnosis of H. pylori infection.

Neural stem progenitor cell (NSPC) transplantation has been regarded as a promising therapeutic method for spinal cord injury (SCI) repair. However, different NSPCs may have different therapeutic effects, and it is therefore important to identify the optimal NSPC type. In our study, we compared the transcriptomes of human fetal brain-derived NSPCs (BNSPCs), spinal cord-derived NSPCs (SCNSPCs) and H9 embryonic stem-cell derived NSPCs (H9-NSPCs) in vitro and subsequently we transplanted each NSPC type on a collagen scaffold into a T8-9 complete SCI rat model in vivo. In vitro data showed that SCNSPCs had more highly expressed genes involved in nerve-related functions than the other two cell types. In vivo, compared with BNSPCs and H9-NSPCs, SCNSPCs exhibited the best therapeutic effects; in fact, SCNSPCs facilitated electrophysiological and hindlimb functional recovery. This study demonstrates that SCNSPCs may be an appropriate candidate cell type for SCI repair, which is of great clinical significance.

OBJECTIVES: Malnutrition is common among elderly patients with cancer, and greatly affects patients' quality of life. Malnutrition is a key factor in the development of systemic, chronic, low-grade inflammation that can exacerbate. METHODS: A total of 633 elderly patients with cancer from 29 tertiary public hospitals in 14 cities in China were selected as the research subjects. Physical examination, questionnaire survey, medical history collection, and blood index detection were performed on the research subjects to analyze the relationship between malnutrition, nutritional support, and infection status. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in infection rate among elderly hospitalized patients with cancer and different cancer types, cancer stages, or therapy methods (P > 0.05). The proportion of vomiting, loss of appetite, depression, and physical fatigue in patients with good nutritional status were lower than in patients with moderate or severe malnutrition (P < 0.05). Nutritional support is crucial for the nutritional status of elderly patients with cancer, and patients without special nutritional guidance are more likely to develop infection (P < 0.05). After adjusting for confounding variables, the results of the logistic regression analysis showed that oral nutritional supplements (odds ratio [OR]: 0.088; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.015-0.514), parenteral nutrition (OR: 0.091; 95% CI, 0.011-0.758), and individualized nutritional guidance (OR: 0.026; 95% CI, 0.003-0.202) were all protective factors associated with cancer infection. CONCLUSIONS: Many elderly hospitalized patients with cancer have local or systemic infections, and good nutrition is associated with lower rates of infection. Receiving nutritional guidance or support is associated with lower infection rates in elderly patients with cancer.

There has been a significant amount of research on correlates of bullying victimization, but most prior studies are descriptive and do not distinguish between different types of bullying. The current study used a case-control study design to explore factors related to different types of bullying victimization, including physical, relational, verbal, sexual, property, and poly-bullying victimization. This study was conducted in a southern city in China, including 3054 cases who self-reported being victims of school bullying and 3054 controls who reported not being involved in any school bullying in the past 12 months. Each victim case was matched with a control on gender, school, and grade level. Univariate logistic analyses and multivariate conditional logistic regression analyses were used to identify factors associated with being a victim of school bullying. Results suggest physical bullying victimization was only associated with a family-level characteristic (parenting style) while the other four types of bullying victimization (relational, verbal, sexual, and property bullying) and poly-bullying victimization were associated with multiple social domain variables at individual, family, and school levels. Findings from this study provide evidence of factors for different types of bullying victimization and have implications for potential measures to prevent bullying. Measures from multiple social domains, including individual, family and school (e.g., developing healthy behaviors, improving social skills, positive parent-child interactions, building trust between teachers and peers, and forming strong friendships), should be considered in order to effectively prevent adolescent victimization from bullying.

BACKGROUND: Anopheles maculatus, Anopheles minimus and Anopheles dirus are the major vectors of malaria transmission in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). The malaria burden in this region has decreased significantly in recent years as all GMS countries progress towards malaria elimination. It is necessary to investigate the Anopheles diversity and abundance status and assess the Plasmodium infection rates to understand the malaria transmission potential of these vector species in GMS countries to guide the development of up-to-date vector control strategies and interventions. METHODS: A survey of mosquitoes was conducted in Stung Treng, Sainyabuli and Phongsaly Provinces on the Cambodia-Laos, Thailand-Laos and China-Laos borders, respectively. Mosquito collection was done by overnight trapping at sentinel sites in each province. After morphological identification, the 18S rRNA-based nested-PCR was performed to detect malaria parasites in the captured Anopheles mosquitoes. RESULTS: A total of 18 965 mosquitoes comprising of 35 species of 2 subgenera (Subgenus Anopheles and Subgenus Cellia) and 4 tribes (Tribes Culicini, Aedini, Armigerini and Mansoniini) were captured. Tribe Culicini accounted for 85.66% of captures, followed by Subgenus Anopheles (8.15%). Anopheles sinensis dominated the Subgenus Anopheles by 99.81%. Plasmodium-infection was found in 25 out of the 1 683 individual or pooled samples of Anopheles. Among the 25 positive samples, 19, 5 and 1 were collected from Loum, Pangkhom and Siem Pang village, respectively. Eight Anopheles species were found infected with Plasmodium, i.e., An. sinensis, Anopheles kochi, Anopheles vagus, An. minimus, Anopheles annularis, Anopheles philippinensis, Anopheles tessellatus and An. dirus. The infection rates of Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax and mixture of Plasmodium parasite species were 0.12% (2/1 683), 1.31% (22/1 683) and 0.06% (1/1 683), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, this survey re-confirmed that multiple Anopheles species carry malaria parasites in the international border areas of the GMS countries. Anopheles sinensis dominated the Anopheles collections and as carriers of malaria parasites, therefore may play a significant role in malaria transmission. More extensive investigations of malaria vectors are required to reveal the detailed vector biology, ecology, behaviour, and genetics in GMS regions in order to assist with the planning and implementation of improved malaria control strategies.

Lipid phosphate phosphatases (LPPs) are a key enzyme in the production and degradation of phosphatidic acid (PA), which plays an important role in plant growth, development, stress resistance and plant hormone response. Thus far, little is known about the LPP family genes in kiwifruit (Actinidia spp.). According to this study, 7 members in the AcLPP family were identified from the whole genome of kiwifruit, the subcellular localization predictions were mainly on the plasma membrane. Chromosomal localization analysis showed that the AcLPP genes were unevenly distributed on 5 chromosomes, it was determined to have undergone strong purifying selection pressure. There were 5 duplicate gene pairs and all underwent segmental duplication events. The LPP genes of kiwifruit were conserved when compared with other plants, especially in terms of evolutionary relationships, conserved motifs, protein sequences, and gene structures. Cis-regulatory elements mainly included hormone response elements and abiotic response elements. Functional annotation of GO revealed that AcLPP genes were closely related to phosphatase/hydrolase activity, phosphorus metabolism and dephosphorylation. AcLPP genes family were predicted to be targets of miRNA. Transcript level analysis revealed that the AcLPP family played diverse functions in different tissues and during growth, development, and postharvest storage stages. qPCR analysis showed that the members of AcLPP gene family might be regulated by ETH, ABA, GA3, and IAA hormone signals. The family members were regulated by the stress of salt stress, osmotic stress, cold stress, and heat stress. These results would provide a basis and reference for studying the agricultural characteristics of kiwifruit and improving its stress resistance.

Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis) derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) have been proposed to play a key role in regulating the host immune responses. In this study, we provided the first investigation of EVs proteomics released by T. spiralis muscle larvae (ML). T. spiralis ML EVs (Ts-ML-EVs) were successfully isolated and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and western blotting. Using liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer (LC-MS/MS) analysis, we identified 753 proteins in the Ts-ML-EVs proteome and annotated by gene ontology (GO). These proteins were enriched in different categories by GO, kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) and domain analysis. GO enrichment analysis indicated association of protein deglutathionylation, lysosomal lumen and serine-type endopeptidase inhibitor activity with proteins which may be helpful during parasite-host interaction. Moreover, KEGG enrichment analysis revealed involvement of Ts-ML-EVs proteins in other glycan degradation, complement and coagulation cascades, proteasome and various metabolism pathways. In addition, BALB/c mice were immunized by subcutaneous injection of purified Ts-ML-EVs. Ts-ML-EVs group demonstrated a 23.4% reduction in adult worms and a 43.7% reduction in ML after parasite challenge. Cellular and humoral immune responses induced by Ts-ML-EVs were detected, including the levels of specific antibodies (IgG, IgM, IgE, IgG1 and IgG2a) as well as cytokines (IL-12, IFN-γ, IL-4 and IL-10) in serum. The results showed that Ts-ML-EVs could induce a Th1/Th2 mixed immune response with Th2 predominant. This study revealed a potential role of Ts-ML-EVs in T. spiralis biology, particularly in the interaction with host. This work provided a critical step to against T. spiralis infection based on Ts-ML-EVs.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) encodes numerous outer membrane proteins (OMPs), with considerable geographic heterogeneity and related to different clinical outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the distribution characteristics of five important OMP genes (sabA, hofC, homA, homB and frpB-4) in different regions of China. MATERIALS AND METHOD: A total of 266 strains were isolated from 348 stomach biopsy specimens in Shandong, Guangxi, Heilongjiang, Hunan, and Qinghai provinces. The presence of sabA, hofC, homA, homB and frpB-4 gene was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from H. pylori genomic DNA. RESULTS: Among the strains in five regions, the prevalence of frpB-4 was 100% and that of hofC was 97.7%. The prevalence of homB in the isolates from Qinghai (45.5%) was significantly lower than that in Shandong (75.3%), Guangxi (76.9%) and Hunan (69.6%) (P<0.05). The frequency of homA in Shandong (30.1%) was significantly lower than in Guangxi (57.7%) and Qinghai (63.6%) (P<0.05). The prevalence of the sabA gene in Shandong, Guangxi, Heilongjiang, Hunan and Qinghai provinces was 21.9%, 59.7%, 45.9%, 52.2%, and 18.2%, respectively (P<0.05). The sabA "on" status was significantly more frequent in isolates from Guangxi (46.8%), Heilongjiang (37.8%), and Hunan (47.8%) than Qinghai (3.0%) (P<0.05). The presence of homA and sabA genes may be negatively correlated with the development of gastritis. There was no significant association between the frpB-4, hofC, homB gene and clinical outcomes. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of homA, homB, and sabA genes and the sabA "on" or "off" status have significant geographical differences among five provinces in China. The presence of homA and sabA genes may be protective factors of gastritis.

Objective: Growth hormone receptor (GHR) mediates most GH biological actions. This study is aimed to evaluate whether GHR fl/d3 polymorphism contributes to the inter-individual variability of growth and metabolism in healthy children and adolescents. Methods: A total of 4,730 students aged 6-16 years from Yixing and Suqian City in China were included in this cross-sectional study. Height and body mass index (BMI) were transformed into the form of z-score corresponding to age and gender. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the associations of GHR fl/d3 polymorphism with height, BMI, metabolic traits, and hypertension by estimating the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: GHR d3 allele was inversely associated with overweight, total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) levels (OR [95% CI] for overweight: 0.754 [0.593-0.959], P = 0.021; OR [95% CI] for TC: 0.744 [0.614-0.902], P = 0.003; OR [95% CI] for TG: 0.812 [0.654-0.998], P = 0.047). GHR d3 allele was associated with decreased odds of pre-hypertension in boys (OR [95% CI]: 0.791 [0.645-0.971], P = 0.025), but associated with increased odds of pre-hypertension and hypertension in girls (ORs [95% CIs]: 1.379 [1.106-1.719], P = 0.004; OR [95% CI]: 1.240 [1.013-1.519], P = 0.037). Interaction of GHR fl/d3 polymorphism with gender contributed to increased odds of pre-hypertension and hypertension (interactive ORs [95% CIs]: 1.735 [1.214-2.481], P = 0.003; OR [95% CI]: 1.509 [1.092-2.086], P = 0.013). Stratification analysis showed that the correlation tendencies of GHR fl/d3 polymorphism and BMI with age were different between two cities with discrepant economic development levels. Conclusion: GHR fl/d3 polymorphism is associated with growth, metabolism, and hypertension in children and adolescents with the gender specificity, and the genetic effect of GHR fl/d3 may be modified by the local socioeconomic levels.

BACKGROUND: Adopted the competing-risk model to investigate the relevant factors affecting the prostate cancer (PCa)-specific mortality among Asian-American PCa patients based on the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. METHODS: The information of 26,293 Asian-American patients diagnosed with PCa between 2004 and 2015 were extracted from the SEER 18 database. Subjects were divided into three groups: died of PCa, died of other causes, survival based on the outcomes at the end of 155 months' follow-up. Multivariate analysis was performed by the Fine-gray proportional model. Meanwhile, subgroup analyses were conducted risk stratification by race and age. RESULTS: Age ≥ 65 years [Hazard ratio (HR) = 1.509, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.299-1.754], race (HR = 1.220, 95% CI 1.028-1.448), marital status (unmarried, single or widowed, HR = 1.264, 95% CI 1.098-1.454), tumor grade II (HR = 3.520, 95% CI 2.915-4.250), the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) stage (T3: HR = 1.597, 95% CI 1.286-1.984; T4: HR = 2.446, 95% CI 1.796-3.331; N1: HR = 1.504, 95% CI 1.176-1.924; M1: HR = 9.875, 95% CI 8.204-11.887) at diagnosis, radiotherapy (HR = 1.892, 95% CI 1.365-2.623), regional nodes positive (HR = 2.498, 95% CI 1.906-3.274) increased risk of PCa-specific mortality for Asian-American PCa patients, while surgical (HR = 0.716, 95% CI 0.586-0.874) reduced the risk. CONCLUSION: The study findings showed that age, race, marital status, tumor grade (II), AJCC stages (T3, T4, N1, M1) at diagnosis, radiotherapy, regional nodes positive and surgery was associated with the specific mortality of PCa patients among Asian-Americans.

BACKGROUND: To develop an effective malaria vector intervention method in forested international border regions within the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), more in-depth studies should be conducted on local Anopheles species composition and bionomic features. There is a paucity of comprehensive surveys of biodiversity integrating morphological and molecular species identification conducted within the border of Laos and Cambodia. METHODS: A total of 2394 adult mosquitoes were trapped in the Cambodia-Laos border region. We first performed morphological identification of Anopheles mosquitoes and subsequently performed molecular identification using 412 recombinant DNA-internal transcribed spacer 2 (rDNA-ITS2) and 391 mitochondrial DNA-cytochrome c oxidase subunit 2 (mtDNA-COII) sequences. The molecular and morphological identification results were compared, and phylogenetic analysis of rDNA-ITS2 and mtDNA-COII was conducted for the sequence divergence among species. RESULTS: Thirteen distinct species of Anopheles were molecularly identified in a 26,415 km2 border region in Siem Pang (Cambodia) and Pathoomphone (Laos). According to the comparisons of morphological and molecular identity, the interpretation of local species composition for dominant species in the Cambodia-Laos border (An. dirus, An. maculatus, An. philippinensis, An. kochi and An. sinensis) achieved the highest accuracy of morphological identification, from 98.37 to 100%. In contrast, the other species which were molecularly identified were less frequently identified correctly (0-58.3%) by morphological methods. The average rDNA-ITS2 and mtDNA-COII interspecific divergence was respectively 318 times and 15 times higher than their average intraspecific divergence. The barcoding gap ranged from 0.042 to 0.193 for rDNA-ITS2, and from 0.033 to 0.047 for mtDNA-COII. CONCLUSIONS: The Cambodia-Laos border hosts a high diversity of Anopheles species. The morphological identification of Anopheles species provides higher accuracy for dominant species than for other species. Molecular methods combined with morphological analysis to determine species composition, population dynamics and bionomic characteristics can facilitate a better understanding of the factors driving malaria transmission and the effects of interventions, and can aid in achieving the goal of eliminating malaria.

Nestin is expressed extensively in neural stem/progenitor cells during neural development, but its expression is mainly restricted to the ependymal cells in the adult spinal cord. After spinal cord injury (SCI), Nestin expression is reactivated and Nestin-positive (Nestin+) cells aggregate at the injury site. However, the derivation of Nestin+ cells is not clearly defined. Here, we found that Nestin expression was substantially increased in the lesion edge and lesion core after SCI. Using a tamoxifen inducible CreER(T2)-loxP system, we verified that ependymal cells contribute few Nestin+ cells either to the lesion core or the lesion edge after SCI. In the lesion edge, GFAP+ astrocytes were the main cell type that expressed Nestin; they then formed an astrocyte scar. In the lesion core, Nestin+ cells expressed αSMA or Desmin, indicating that they might be derived from pericytes. Our results reveal that Nestin+ cells in the lesion core and edge came from various cell types and rarely from ependymal cells after complete transected SCI, which may provide new insights into SCI repair.

The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of unintentional injuries and to identify factors mediating the risk of unintentional injuries among internal migrant children in southern China using self-reported data collected between April 2016 and March 2017. Logistic regression models were used to identify significant risk factors for unintentional injuries among the internal migrant children. The prevalence of self-reported unintentional injuries among internal migrant children in this study was 19.15%. Internal migrant children exhibiting antisocial (antisocial behaviour vs. no behaviour problems, OR = 2.162, 95% CI: 1.194-3.915, p = .011) and neurotic behaviours (neurotic behaviour vs. no behaviour problems, OR = 2.064, 95% CI: 1.098-3.880, p = .024) were more likely to report unintentional injuries. There was a positive correlation between the number of risk behaviours and the prevalence of unintentional injuries among non-migrant and internal migrant children. Children's behavioural problems were closely related to unintentional injuries and may be useful as predictors of unintentional injuries in children.
